It begins with an idea.

This site is a collection of projects and work by creative, John Durrant.

I haven’t included everything, of course. I hope, though, that it gives you a flavour of what I’m up to. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented people over the years, and I’ve tried to credit them wherever possible.

I’m a Grammy-nominated filmmaker and multi-award-winning film and television designer, as well as a virtual reality director. My work has received recognition from BAFTA and the Royal Television Society, among others, and has appeared at festivals including Beijing, Venice, CPH and SXSW.

My previous incarnations include Head of Graphics at the BBC and Creative Director at two independent companies I founded: BDH Design & Direction and Academy 7 Productions.

I began my career in London, working with Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, before moving into television with MTV and Diverse Productions. I worked on Network 7’s youth programmes, which won a BAFTA for originality, and on Dispatches, Channel 4’s proudly independent documentary strand.

I later headed up graphics at the BBC in Bristol, home to its renowned Natural History Unit and major factual documentary output.

Since then, I’ve directed work for all of the UK’s major broadcasters, made commercials, and even created party-political films for Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and the British Labour Party.

I’m also a musician and composer, creating ambient sketches and film scores that combine piano, cello and field recordings. You can find more of that work at johndurrantcomposer.com.

Currently, I’m hacking musical boxes for fun.

I was born on the Isle of Man and grew up in and around Stoke, Manchester and Liverpool in the UK’s North West. I’m currently living in Bristol and Hay on Wye on the Welsh Border.
